Lalitpur Nursing Campus
Kathmandu, Nepal

Lalitpur Nursing Campus (LNC) has been educating students since 1959. They are committed to training suitably qualified Nepali young women as professional nurses who will be distinctive by the quality of their care and concern for patients in the hospital and community, as well as, by their good academic achievement. While academically responsible to Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Medicine, LNC is a autonomous, self sustaining campus with Christian values.

As a role model for Nepali society LNC continues to carry out Christian activities within and outside the campus.

The overall standard of nursing care in Nepal is raised by the influence of quality care demonstrated at LNC. The LNC is a model that seeks to directly influence the health training in Nepal. They have a three year Nursing Certificate program (like RN) and a two year post basic Bachelor of Nursing degree. More than half of the total study time for each student is spent doing practical experience. They make home visits to families in the community and do community diagnosis and case survey. Additional practical experience is obtained working in various wards at Patan Hospital.

Since 1972 the headquarters for the campus has been the former Rana palace building, built in 1937 as the villa for the extended family of the former ruler. The building houses not only classrooms and administrative offices but hostels for over 100 students. The building is treasured as an antiquity and while the structure is sound, there is much wasted space.

Each year Medical Benevolence Foundation (MBF) competes for grant awards from a division of USAID – American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA). These grants make possible the building and renovation of hospital facilities, purchasing of furnishings and medical equipment, and the providing of educational opportunities. The grants require MBF to raise shared funding as part of the total cost of the project.

The American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID) grant awarded to Medical Benevolence Foundation in support of the LNC and shared funding raised by MBF will support modernizing the 21,000 square foot building while re-arranging the interior floor plan, increasing electrical service capacity and increasing the heated water supply. The funds will also supply additional teaching and learning equipment and instructional aids including computers and library resources.
